'Jack the Giant Killer' follows the trend of taking old stories to new heights

Even before watching the trailer for Jack the Giant Killer, I had a feeling I knew what I was in for. The title easily gave it away, but the change isn’t unexpected. After all, “Jack and the Beanstalk” doesn’t exactly pack as big of a punch as Jack the Giant Killer. While it’s not another Snow White, it is another fairytale remake, which I’ve been a bit sceptical about lately. That’s not to say that every remake is or isn’t doing it right, but I’m starting to warm-up to all these revamped films. Everyone is all frowns in these new Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows photos

If we didn't already understand the dark tone of the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows from its super serious, LOTR-ish trailer or extended featurette, the frowns in these promotional photos will certainly do the trick. These are the first photos I've seen of several characters appearing in the new film, and it's always exciting to see Bill Nighy. I wonder if he's a vampire. The actors and characters names are labeled below, though I apologize to Potter-ites in advance if I screw them up. Thanks To Spoiler TV (via Collider) for the pics.

Weekend Preview - It's 2012 or PIRATE RADIO for you...

What a weekend. Apparently no one wants to face the apocalypse head-to-head because the only competition for 2012 is Pirate Radio and it's in about a third of the theaters. What the hell happened to John Cusack's career, anyway? If I remember right, it was respectable at one time, but I can't remember a good film he's been in since Identity and Runaway Jury in 2003. Maybe he thinks the world is ending in two years.
