'The Raid: Redemption' mini review - Exciting moments, but a lot of gore

I love a good kung fu movie, but things get messy when everyone has guns, knives, and swords. The Raid: Redemption (subtitled in English) has some amazing fighting scenes, but in between these sequences, it gets to be a little much. There isn’t much maming or guts flying, but prepare to watch a lot of people get their necks sliced, get stabbed through the eye, or other disgusting things like that. If slicing and dicing doesn’t bother you at all, you should feel quite at home here. Don’t expect a story though.

'The Bourne Legacy' trailer - Jeremy Renner does his best Damon

Matt Damon opted not to return to the Bourne series for a fourth outing, but that isn’t stopping Universal. The studio promoted the writer of the first three films, Tony Gilroy, to direct The Bourne Legacy, and it has concocted a new character, played by Jeremy Renner, to take Jason Bourne’s place. Despite all this, it does look intriguing. Am I a sucker?

'John Carter' TV trailer highlights some new action

john-carter-tv-trailer

Disney is airing a new one-minute TV spot for John Carter during ABC’s The River on Tuesday night and ComingSoon.net got a hold of it. The new trailer further emphasizes action scenes and is mostly full of one-liners as /Film points out, but I have to say, it still looks pretty thrilling.

'Underworld: Awakening' review - Selene, the magnificent invincible vampire

Step right up, folks. On display today is Selene (Kate Beckinsale), the great invincible vampire of the Underworld series. You can throw her off a building, drop an elevator on her, or throw a 20 foot werewolf at her, but nothing can harm her. Like Alice from the Resident Evil movie series (which is going into its fifth installment this year), Selene hardly speaks, is being hunted for no good reason, and is asolutely impossible to kill. Every Underworld film throws more and more vampires, lycans (werewolves), and armed humans at her, but she just keeps shooting and bullet-timing her way from scene to scene. There’s no stopping her.

'Haywire' review - A superb action film that's destined to be a cult classic

Have you ever seen a classic Jackie Chan or Bruce Lee movie? Remember the surprising speed and spontaneity of the fights Lee or Chan would have? When those men fought, you could feel the pain. Haywire’s Gina Carano exudes the kind of authenticity of the great action stars of old. And she should, being an actual award-winning mixed martial artist. Thanks to an adept script by Lem Dobbs (The Score) and creative directing by Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven), Haywire might be the grittiest action thriller since Taken

'Act of Valor' trailer and poster - A film about Navy SEALs that stars active Navy SEALs

Relativity Media is taking a risk on Act of Valor. It has already cost the studio $13 million, and another 30 million will be needed to advertise the film, yet Act of Valor has virtually no big-name actors on its docket. In fact, the film’s stars aren’t actors at all, but they’re arguably the most qualified candidates for the roles: active duty Navy SEALs themselves.
