After months of rumours regarding possible villains and the actors supposedly playing them, J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot sequel has finally gotten underway and shooting started this week. With cast confirmations emerging all the time it seems like a good time to recap the news so far.

I’ve missed Middle Earth. It’s been 10 years since The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring hit theaters, and we’re still a year away from the first Hobbit movie’s release, but at least we now know things are looking up. A few hours ago, Peter Jackson released the first trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which is the first of two films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s first novel about Middle Earth, The Hobbit. The journey stars Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins with Ian McKellen returning as Gandalf the Wizard and takes place about 50-60 years before Lord of the Rings.

Hugo is a marvelous film about the magic of cinema.
If you’re skeptical, you’re forgiven, as this is a jarring departure from Director Martin Scorsese’s usual material. But what it lacks in gangsters and bullets it makes up for in passion and spectacle. Though billed as a movie for children (and certainly entertaining enough for them), Hugo is a labour of love, and an homage to the visual pleasures of cinema that will delight audiences of all ages and tastes.

I’ve always had a soft spot for Harold and Kumar. There’s something refreshingly honest in their shenanigans, a proud lack of theatrical ambition that eases moviegoers slowly, tenderly, into the middle of unvarnished lunacy. The cheetah ride in the original film has no right occupying space in my mind as something cinematically classic, nor does the smoking session with George W. Bush that occurred in the second film. These scenes, while highly creative, are absurdly stupid (or stupidly absurd). But they work well because the franchise has never pretended otherwise.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hit theaters for another year, but Peter Jackson and his crew have already released a number of pictures and videos about the making of the films. The fourth video blog, which was released Friday, talks a bit about what it’s like to film in 48 frames per second and 3D.

Studio officials at Warner Bros. gave a statement today explaining that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I, the first of the two final movies of the Harry Potter film saga, will NOT be released in 3D as originally planned. The studio has cited time constraints as the reason for scrapping the project. The movie hits theaters on November 19th, which is only a little more than a month away.

George Lucas woke up today and realized that it's been almost five years since he graced us with a Star Wars movie. So, much like a day he woke up in 1996, the director has decided to theatrically re-release every Star Wars movie available, all six of them, in order, beginning with the prequels. Better yet, he's re-mastering them in 3D!

Ticket prices have risen 40 cents (5%) this year, while attendance has fallen 1%, according to a new report by TheWrap. Even with stagnant attendance, Hollywood is set to bring in more than the $10.6 billion it brought in last year by a good margin. The scape-goat for high prices: 3D.

Talk about a scam. Just when I came to terms with James Cameron re-releasing Avatar in theaters with the gimmick of adding 9 minutes of extra footage, reports have surfaced that a new DVD/Blu-ray version of the film with 16 minutes of extra footage will hit shelves in November. That's not the end either. A 3D version of the Blu-ray will not be available until next year with who knows how much more bonus footage.
