New 'Blade Runner' movie is officially a sequel

Sequel? Prequel? Broadway play? The future of Blade Runner has been in debate all year. In March, Alcon Entertainment bought the rights to Blade Runner; in August, Ridley Scott was confirmed as the director for the project; and now, we’ve learned that the project is a sequel ot the 1982 original.
Though the Blade Runner sequel will retain the original director (Scott), producer Andrew Kosove told the LA Times that he does not anticipate a return of the original Blade Runner lead, Harrison Ford: “In no way do I speak for Ridley Scott…but if you’re asking me will this movie have anything to do with Harrison Ford, the answer is no. This is a total reinvention, and in my mind that means doing everything fresh, including casting.”
Kosove highlighted early 2014 as a possible release date, citing the laundry list of undertakings that lead to a successful film. Ridley Scott, commenting on the story of the upcoming sequel, said “we’re quite a long way in, actually.” However, there is still no official writer, as Scott is currently in the process of interviewing potential candidates.
Personally, I’m glad the new Blade Runner project isn’t some modernized retelling hiding under the guise of a “fresh new perspective.” I’ll take a brand new story over a remake any day.
