New PRINCE OF PERSIA featurette shows promise for the film

Prince of Persia has a lot going for it. Jerry Bruckheimer is fresh off the hugely successful Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy and Director Mike Newell is packed with experience (he even directed Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire). On top of that, Jordan Mechner, creator of the videogame series, is involved and Jake Gyllenhaal is a solid pick for Prince Dastan.

I'm happy that Bruckheimer and company chose The Sands of Time as the film's foundation. It has a fascinating story and it shows they are committed to the material. The Sands of Time is one of the most critically acclaimed and best selling games of 2003 (seven years ago). Usually studios just invent a new story and do whatever the hell they want. This video featurette shows that they are sticking a lot closer to the plot of the game than I thought. Watch the new video after the jump.

Basing a movie on a videogame is a big risk, even if it's a renowned 20-year-old series like Prince of PersiaMortal Kombat remains the best game-to-movie adaptation I've seen, which is sad; it's not very good. Come May, I'd very much like to say that one studio finally made a great film out of a great game. What do you guys think?
